I had planned on this post being a story of our crossing over from La Paz to Mazatlan, and I'll likely get there, but first I wanted to share something that has affected Kimberley and I profoundly. Over the past number of months in Mexico, we have met many very nice people. Some we have come to get to know better than others, and some who have become, even with just very little contact, fast and hopefully longtime friends. But sometimes that is not to be.
In the spring of 2010, Kimberley and I met and got to know a couple and their friendly airdale on the boat Endless Summer II. The folks are Lorrie and Gary, and the dog Buster. There was a period of time where Gary had to return to the States for some medical treatment, and Lorrie, Kimberley, Bailey, Buster and I spent time together, played on the beach together and shared some brief experiences, Once he returned, I also started to get to know Gary as well. Just a great couple living and loving life and each other. They had many great adventures and experiences and been to some exotic places that most people will likely never see.
In August, Lorrie emailed to let us know that Gary was in a fight for his life with Lukemia. The prognosis was apparently good, and treatment had begun right away. As the months moved on, it sounded like Gary was winning the battle. A few setbacks here and there, but generally he was doing well.
Sadly, just a little while ago, Kimberley let me know that our good friend lost his battle. I can't tell you how heartbroken we both are for Lorrie and buster, and how sad we are that we won't have the opportunity to sit on each others boats again sipping margarita's and sharing our common interests and experiences.
It's very strange to me how someone you really have just gotten to know can have such a strong impact on your life, but both Lorrie and Gary did just that. In her email to us, I think Lorrie said it best when she said of Gary " He is free now to pursue other adventures, healthy and fit as he should be. I know he has his angle wings and is watching over me until we meet again. believe me I will be looking for him."
Lorrie and Gary lived life and shared their adventures. I know because of that, Lorrie will have many fond memories of their time together, both on and off the boat. They did what they wanted to do and I suspect would have continued on if fate hadn't stepped in the way.
They lived life, and although their experiences and life together was far, far to short, and cutoff far to abruptly, they did it, and I think Kimberley and I both feel enriched by the time we had to spend with these great people.
Lorrie, we are both thinking of you and share in your sadness and loss.
Gary, flap your angel wings and send us some wind. I want to go sailing with you my friend.
